When you simulate a graphically modelled system dynamics model, the tool transforms the model into a Modelica model which is simulated using either the internal Modelica solver or OpenModelica , an open source Modelica environment.
Additionally, you can extract the Modelica code from the tool and simulate it using your favourite Modelica tool. Simantics System Dynamics supports all the common system dynamics modelling operations. Vensim PLE is ideal for classroom use and personal learning of system dynamics. The Vensim Model Reader is free software which allows you to publish models constructed with Vensim and distribute them to other people. Your model and the Vensim model reader can be copied and passed to as many people as you want, giving people access to your model without their needing to purchase Vensim.
The software is available under commercial, funded research, and academic use licenses and runs on Windows and the Macintosh. Ventana has been supporting education for many years by providing a learning edition of the software that is free for academic use.
There are a number of other products that can be used to construct models. Anylogic, from XJ Technologies , supports models containing discrete event, agent-based and system dynamics constituents. It is available under a commercial license. Berkley Madonna uses a differential equation representation to develop models. It can be used to do some agent based modeling.
